Posteriormente, su sepultación será en el Parque Santiago (Rinconada El Salto 0516, Sector 60, 4ta Puerta- Huechuraba).

Padre Jorge Cánepa Ossa C.S.C. Obituario (1928-2018)

Father Jorge Canepa Ossa C.S.C Obituary (1928-2018)
Jorge Canepa was born 15 February 1928 in Santiago, Chile, and baptized February 25 of the same year at Nuestra Señora del Carmen Church. His father was Jorge Canepa Pesse and his mother was Ana Ossa Nebel. He had two older sisters, Ana and Maria Cristina, who have already passed away.
His father was a dentist who had studied in Philadelphia and wanted his son to learn English from a young age, and so Jorge went to elementary school at an English school close to home, to later enter Saint George’s School in 1941, entering first year of Humanities in high school.

At that time Father Alberto Hurtado (Saint Alberto Hurtado, Chile’s first saint) gave a vocational talk at Saint George’s School. Jorge went to that talk and was profoundly motivated to the priestly vocation, which led him to have a conversation with Father James D’Autremont, C.S.C., a young religious who had recently arrived to Chile. Father D’Autremont invited him to think about the road to religious life in Holy Cross.
When he finished studying Humanities in 1945 and after a year of work, Father Jorge traveled to the United States to enter the Congregation, becoming the first Chilean vocation. In this way, with 34 other youth he entered Holy Cross Seminary, Notre Dame, Indiana on 10 September 1947 as a college postulant. On 15 August 1950 he entered the Sacred Heart Novitiate in South Bend, Indiana. His first profession of vows was 16 August 1951, and on 16 August 1954 he took his perpetual profession.

At the University of Notre Dame, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree with a mention in Philosophy (8 August 1952). He then returned to Chile to finish his theology studies at the Pontifical Universidad Catolica de Chile, and he was ordained a priest on 4 March 1956 by Monsignor Pío Fariña.

As a priest, he began to work as a teacher at Saint George’s School, where he excelled as a teacher of Spanish and of English. He also got actively involved in the preparations for the “Cruzada del Rosario en Familia” (Rosary in Family Crusade) in Chile (1960), organized by the Venerable Father Patrick Peyton C.S.C., whom he would come to recognize as one of his masters in the art of Communication.

Later, the Provincial Superior Father Howard Kenna C.S.C. sent Father Jorge to study at the University of Portland, receiving an M.A. in the field of drama, taking on theater as an educational challenge. Because of this, at Saint George’s School with students and professional artists, he created a professional theater company called “Los Moreau” in memory of Blessed Basilio Moreau, founder of the Congregation. Apart from emphasizing theater in his classes, he would teach writing, composition and reading comprehension. He dedicated approximately 50 years of his life to education at Saint George’s School.

In 1973, with the Military Government’s intervention of Saint George’s, he had to leave the school together with the other Holy Cross religious. This was a great sadness that he would always remember throughout his life. His energy led him to take on new challenges, and he was invited by his friend David Benavente to work at Pontifical Universidad Catolica de Chile’s School of the Art of Communication. Later, Father Gerardo Whelan C.S.C. asked him to help out at the Center for Educational Research (CIDE for its initials in Spanish), belonging to the Jesuit Order. He participated in the program for parents and children, and he collaborated in radio programs for literacy in the San Juan de la Costa area of Osorno, and in other rural areas in the south of the country. His desire to accompany the Christian base communities and the most neglected, led him to celebrate the Eucharist each Sunday at Nuestra Señora de los Pobres Parish in Huechuraba for nearly thirty years, which he prepared meticulously.

In 1981, Father Jorge returned to Saint George’s School as a teacher, where together with others, he renewed and strengthened the teaching of English. The excellent quality in the teaching of English was a constant concern for Father Jorge. Together with his great friend and brother in Holy Cross, Father Joseph Dorsey C.S.C, he launched the school’s Audiovisual Department which would have the most modern recording equipment of its time. He was particularly interested in the students getting educated with the new audiovisual tools. His presence was relevant and many will remember when he placed a sign outside of his office saying: “success begins at 40.” He did not look it, but at that time he was nearly 60 years old.
In 1990 he was elected Superior of the District of Chile, where he completed two periods until 1995. During his time as Superior and in the following years, he would make sure to go every week to the Novitiate and teach the young novices Spirituality of the Congregation, Homiletics, and History of Holy Cross in Chile. He continued working as a teacher at Saint George’s School until 2011.

Father Jorge Canepa’s life was marked by his creativity, his great dedication to Catholic education, his constant search for new ways of evangelization, and the meticulous way in which he would prepare and write his homilies every Sunday. On his 50-year anniversary celebration in the priesthood, he said. “I give thanks to God for his inspiration in my Ministry of the Word. I give thanks to Him not just because He brought me to the Holy Cross Congregation but especially because this has given me the opportunity to be part of a Holy Cross apostolic religious pastoral team, in the service of our Lord Jesus.”

He was a good servant of the Church and the first Chilean religious who entered into the Holy Cross Congregation. He lived his last years in the Juan XXIII community which the Congregation maintains in Peñalolen, for those religious that need greater medical attention. It was here that he received the care of Brother Donald Kuchenmeister C.S.C. and the nurse Cristina Yanez, among others.
May the Lord receive him in his Kingdom and grant him eternal peace.
