On Saturday, April 14th Saint George’s College participated for the first time in the Public Speaking Competition put on by the English Speaking Union of Chile! The event was hosted at the beautiful Teatro Municipal, and the evening before included a tour of the theatre as well as a workshop for students led by previous year’s winners. Students from all over the country participated representing over 30 schools. The winner of the competition was awarded the chance to represent Chile in London in the International Public Speaking Competition hosted by the English Speaking Union in England. Students prepared a 5 minute speech on the theme «Great artists have no country». Each student gave their speech in a heat against 8 other students, and the winners of those heats advanced to the semi-final round. The semi-finals required students to present an improptu speech for which they only had 15 minutes to prepare. In the final round, students gave their original speech once more and only student was chosen as the winner.

Diego Zapata of 11th grade proudly represented Saint George’s College in giving his memorized speech ‘Roots’. His speech focused on the process that an artist undergoes when they become an icon, and how in this process they lose the roots that once connected them to their home country. He went on to connect this process to the lives of non artists as well who begin to lose their roots as they enter into a globalized world and become global citizens. Unfortunately, Diego’s heat had some very strong competition and he did not advance to the semi-final round. However, Diego learned much from the experience and is excited to participate again in next year’s competition.
